When the mentor is satisfied that the work is ready for examination, a report is given to the Research Committee for their recommendation and for external moderation. External moderation will be a specialist in the subject matter.
After receiving the reports from the examiners, the Research Committee may give the green light for the oral defense, or resubmission with correction. If it is rejected again the researcher may appeal and request the appointment of another moderator.
A research degree requires considerable investigative ability, writing skills and critical analysis.
A PhD/DBA may be completed within three academic years. Transfer students from other institutions are welcome to apply, and advanced standing may be given for previous study and research. Extensions are permitted (maximum of Four terms for Master’s and eight terms for Doctorate).
Each academic term (semester) is 3 months. MA and MBA students are committed for a minimum of 6 to 8 terms. Doctoral researchers are committed for a minimum of 12 terms. All researchers may extend their enrolment within reason but are required to pay separately for each extension term.
4 terms a year, the beginning of each month, you can start your research degree and the term begins the first date of matriculation (entry) when the student is approved as a researcher.

Mentors
Paris Graduate School/ Innovative Knowledge Institute will allocate the most suitable mentor for your research. Mentors are drawn from leading universities in France and around the world. They are highly qualified, well-respected and experienced experts in their chosen fields who enjoy working with fellow researchers. The mentor and the student will decide how they will communicate: on-line, by email, skype or telephone or meeting face-to-face. Students may request a specific mentor for their research.

Learning Research
Students may utilise their own local learning resources such as university library facilities, public libraries, museums, art galleries and special collections for research purposes. The Internet increasingly offers a wealth of reliable and current information which can be exploited for the
purposes of research. Online forums, chat-rooms and audio/video conferencing can now facilitate global research discussions cheaply, quickly and effectively. Students have access to an online library of thousands of journals and magazines.

Assessments
Assessment and/or examination is built into all programmes, from Bachelor up to Doctoral levels. All thesis and dissertation submissions are examined by a panel of reviewers with at least one independent examiner. The panel recommends a decision on the awarding of the appropriate degree. A thesis or dissertation submission can be passed, or failed. In some cases a re-submission may be required, a lesser degree awarded or an oral examination. The College has a policy on Intellectual property rights, and encourages successful students to disseminate and publish the outcomes of their research.

PhD Curriculum

The PhD by Research curriculum is designed to facilitate an immersive epistemological journey, wherein candidates engage in the rigorous exploration of their chosen domain through the lens of original inquiry and methodological innovation. The program’s structure is predicated upon a symbiotic relationship between theoretical frameworks and empirical investigation, fostering an environment conducive to the generation of novel contributions to knowledge. Central to this endeavor is the formulation of a research proposal that delineates a clearly articulated research question, situating it within the context of existing literature and identifying methodological paradigms appropriate for addressing said inquiry.
Throughout the duration of this doctoral program, scholars will partake in a series of specialized seminars and workshops aimed at enhancing their methodological acumen and analytical competencies. These modules encompass advanced topics such as qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, critical discourse analysis, and data interpretation techniques. Moreover, candidates are expected to cultivate a robust understanding of ethical considerations pertinent to their research endeavors, including but not limited to issues surrounding consent, confidentiality, and intellectual property rights. The culmination of this academic odyssey is the production of a dissertation that embodies both scholarly rigor and innovative thought, contributing substantively to the corpus of knowledge within their field while adhering to the highest standards of academic integrity.

In addition to independent research pursuits, the program encourages interdisciplinary collaboration through participation in conferences and symposia that promote dialogue across diverse fields of inquiry. Such engagement is pivotal in broadening one’s scholarly network while facilitating exposure to cutting-edge developments within various disciplines. Ultimately, this PhD by Research trajectory not only equips candidates with advanced expertise but also instills a profound sense of scholarly responsibility as they prepare for careers in academia or other sectors where critical thinking and innovative problem-solving are paramount.

The PhD by Research trajectory is a meticulously orchestrated academic endeavor that necessitates an intricate interplay of theoretical formulation and empirical investigation. The initial phase, the Proposal Development Process, serves as the foundational bedrock upon which the entire research edifice is constructed. During this phase, the student researcher engages in an exhaustive literature review to delineate a research gap within their chosen field, subsequently formulating a cogent hypothesis or research question. This proposal must encapsulate a comprehensive methodological framework while articulating the anticipated contributions to existing scholarship, thereby ensuring alignment with institutional and disciplinary standards.

Subsequent to the proposal’s validation, the Preparation for Field Research commences, wherein the researcher meticulously designs data collection methodologies and navigates ethical considerations pertinent to human subjects or sensitive data. This preparatory stage may entail securing necessary permissions from institutional review boards (IRBs) and developing instruments for data acquisition. Following this preparatory groundwork, the researcher embarks on Field Research—an empirical odyssey that involves systematic data collection through various modalities such as surveys, interviews, or experimental protocols. The culmination of this investigative phase culminates in Report Writing, wherein researchers synthesize their findings into a coherent manuscript that not only fulfills academic rigor but also adheres to disciplinary conventions regarding structure and citation practices.

In parallel with these stages is an ongoing engagement with Supervision—a critical component that underscores the mentor-mentee dynamic essential for scholarly development. Supervisors provide guidance throughout each phase of the process, offering insights into methodological nuances and theoretical implications. Upon achieving satisfactory completion of research activities and manuscript preparation, the final step entails Submission of thesis—an act that represents not only compliance with institutional requirements but also contributes to the corpus of knowledge within academia. This submission process typically includes adherence to stringent formatting guidelines and may necessitate a formal defense before an academic panel tasked with evaluating both intellectual merit and scholarly contribution. Thus, navigating these multifaceted steps requires not only diligence but also a profound understanding of epistemological paradigms intrinsic to one’s field of inquiry.

Study Method

The delivery will consist of FOUR components :

  • Lecture session
  • Tutorial session
  • Practical session
  • Blended Learning

Lecture Session
Lectures will be of a maximum duration of 3 hours (with a 10–15-minute break during the period) the purpose of a lecture is to provide key information to the students for the subject being taught.

On occasions, lecture exercises are used which require course participants to become actively involved in “learning by doing”, let students take active part in discussing related current topics.

Tutorial Session
Tutorials will be provided through case studies for the students to further discuss and/or undertake the topics previously covered in the lecture sessions.

Students will be given video/written case studies after each lecture topic and work in groups.

Practical Session
Practical sessions are mainly undertaken in the computer laboratories, or workshop activities are set up to enable the learner to reflect on the processes he or she has experienced. Workshops enhance skills development and the acquisition of knowledge. Short presentations alternate with group work. Students spend time working together in small groups, brainstorming, analysing case-studies, carrying out group discussions or group exercises, learner presentations, role play, plenary feedback session.

PGS Blended Learning Portal
